SYNERGY BETWEEN HARDWARE & SOFTWARE
Three layers for operating Azure Local
Azure Local connects central Azure services with locally operated workloads and a hardware platform designed for this purpose. The three layers interlock—from management and security to virtualization and containers, all the way to the physical infrastructure.
The Control Plane is used to manage the Azure Local environment and connect it to Azure services for identity, monitoring, backup, and security. Azure Arc extends the local infrastructure with additional Azure services.
This is where the actual workloads run—from virtual machines and Azure Virtual Desktop to Kubernetes applications. Hyper-V, Azure Arc Resource Bridge, and Storage Spaces Direct form the local platform for this purpose.
Our Azure Local Appliances provide the hardware foundation for local operation. They combine validated server platforms with the required compute, storage, and network infrastructure, forming the physical basis of the Azure Local environment.
OUR APPLIANCES
Certified, not cobbled together
Just any server that somehow runs Azure Local is by no means an Azure Local Certified platform. Our certified Azure appliances are not a sham; they are listed in the official Microsoft Azure Local Solutions catalog. This means unpleasant surprises are a thing of the past, because our hardware has been tested and approved for operation with Microsoft Azure Local and is therefore part of the

FAQ
What are the benefits of a Microsoft Azure Local Certified Appliance from Pyramid?
Microsoft provides powerful tools and services for Azure Local that turn our appliances into a locally operated cloud platform. All appliances are certified by Microsoft for Azure Local and are therefore aligned for interoperability with the relevant Microsoft technologies.
Depending on the scenario, this includes Solution Builder Extensions for lifecycle management, Storage Spaces Direct for software-defined storage, Azure Virtual Desktop for virtual workstations, Microsoft 365 Local for local productivity services, and Azure Local Disconnected Operations for disconnected or particularly sovereign environments. The combination of certified Pyramid Compute Appliances and Microsoft’s Azure Local ecosystem increases your productivity and creates a reliable foundation for local cloud, virtualization, and storage workloads.
What is Solution Builder Extension (SBE)?
Microsoft’s Solution Builder Extension ensures stable, error-free integration of firmware, driver, monitoring, and diagnostic updates throughout the Azure Local lifecycle. Our Azure Local Certified Appliances support centralized updates via SBE. This simplifies administration, increases operational reliability, and improves supportability. Especially with more than one cluster or appliances distributed across multiple locations, the SBE update process supports efficient operation of local Azure cloud infrastructures.
What is Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD)?
Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Desktop provides virtual Windows desktops and applications. As a user, you access your work environment via your endpoint device, while desktops and applications are centrally provided as virtual machines. In combination with Azure Local, the session hosts can be operated locally on Pyramid Compute Appliances. This is particularly interesting when virtual workstations need to run close to local data sources, applications, or sites.
What is Storage Spaces Direct (S2D)
Storage Spaces Direct is a Microsoft technology for software-defined storage. S2D pools the local drives of multiple servers into a shared, highly available storage pool for Azure Local. Combined with Pyramid Compute Appliances, this creates a powerful storage foundation for virtual machines, applications, and local cloud workloads. Unlike traditional SAN architectures, S2D relies on SSD and NVMe resources installed directly in the appliances, which are combined via software and protected against failures depending on the configuration. This creates a compact, high-performance Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI) platform.
What is Azure Local Disconnected Operations (ALDO)?
Azure Local Disconnected Operations enables the operation of sovereign private cloud and edge environments without a permanent connection to the Azure public cloud. For this purpose, Microsoft provides local management functions that allow selected resources to be operated in a controlled manner directly within your own on-site infrastructure. In combination with Pyramid Compute Appliances, this creates local cloud infrastructures for scenarios with particularly high requirements for data sovereignty, security, and availability. This is especially relevant for public authorities, critical infrastructure, defense, healthcare, industry, or sites with particularly high compliance requirements.
